How to use the hours calculator
Enter the start and end time of a shift and the length of any unpaid break. The calculator shows the time worked in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. Add an hourly rate to see the pay for the shift and for a week of shifts.
Overnight shifts
If the end time is earlier than the start time, such as 22:00 to 06:00, the shift is treated as running past midnight and the hours are counted correctly.
Converting to decimal hours
Payroll systems usually record time as decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.
| Minutes | Decimal |
|---|---|
| 15 | 0.25 |
| 30 | 0.50 |
| 45 | 0.75 |
Tips for accurate timesheets
- Record start and end times as you go rather than from memory.
- Check your employer's rounding rules, such as rounding to the nearest 15 minutes.
- Keep paid and unpaid breaks separate.
